Letter book and day book, 1896-1910. 1841-1862.

Letter book and account ('day') book of Acheson French. The letter book covers 1 Oct. 1841 to 10 Oct. 1862, and includes: copies of official correspondence with C.J. LaTrobe and government officials from 1841-1847; copies of correspondence with S.G. Henty, Edward Henty, Budge Bros. and Maine and Co. re. business matters; copies of correspondence with the editors of The Argus, Portland Guardian and Melbourne Morning Herald re. religious education, the national school system, ecclesiastical titles and the practice of clergymen preaching in public buildings; copies of petitions to Parliament and letters to members of the Legislative Council re. the same matters; copies of correspondence with Western District sheep owners re. land sales and parliamentary bills concerning sheep regulation. The Diary or day book covers 8 Mar. 1843 to 11 Dec. 1857, and includes records of accounts, stock records, shearing records, list of family birthdays, and notes on book club subscribers.

Acheson Jeremiah French (a.k.a. Ffrench) was the first Police Magistrate for the Hamilton district from 1840 to 1847. He lived at 'Monivae', a two-storey bluestone mansion located just off Ballarat Road, which was built c. 1878. After retirement he concentrated on pastoral interests, and was killed in a diving accident at St. Kilda in 1870. From the description of Letter book and day book, 1896-1910. 1841-1862.
